On this page we have some Celtic Knots and Crosses, again all designed by Bettine Bain. The roots of Celtic Art go back to the beginning of the Iron age in Europe. The Celts expressed their deep spiritual beliefs through four main forms of ornament; spirals, key patterns, knots and zoomorphics (human and animal forms). Combinations of these designs were used in highly decorated weaponry, jewellery and stonework. The Romans invading Western Europe in the first century BC tried hard to suppress Celtic culture but it survived and gained a new lease of life at the beginning of Christianity in works of beauty such as the illuminated manuscripts of Lindisfarne and Kells. The purest Celtic tradition survived in Ireland and Northern Scotland - areas beyond the control of the Roman invaders. As
usual, click on a small picture and a larger one should appear. |
